Station Büyükada
1st Award - Büyükada Phaeton Square
Urban Design Competition, 2021
Emerged as an unplanned urban void in the busy Hora district of Prince Islands, Phaeton Square served as the main transportation node and the starting station of the famous horse carriage tours of Büyükada (Prinkipo). Having served as a parking and rotation space, the square was a hidden backstage, out of sight but constantly in preparation for the historically, socially, and culturally rich daily acts of Büyükada.
Within the framework of the project, the square is conceived as an activator of sustainable urban development strategies specifically tailored to Büyükada. It is operationalized as a focus of activities and events in relation to the island’s unique characteristics. The ‘thematic routes’ created based on these characteristics preserve the rich social and cultural context within the island while simultaneously motivating visitors to explore its layers and traces over time. The collective programs are emerging from these scenarios; the square anticipates active participation and forms a surface to be shaped by unpredictable, flexible, and dynamic participation of users and ecologies of the island.
